ACST
Siam International Cricket Sevens 2019
Finals Day Wrap: Sunday
24th November
Raju’s Cricket Club retain
the Cup at the Siam International Cricket Sevens
Raju’s
Cricket Club of Hyderabad ran out as deserved Cup winners at the Siam International
Cricket Sevens at the Gymkhana Club in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand to round
off a brilliant performance over three days.
They
defeated their twin side Raju’s Academy in the final on their 99th cricket
tour. Their total of 93-5 was too much for the Academy’s 31-5, as Abdul Khader was
named as player of the match following his 31 not out and outstanding over of 2
wickets for 0 runs.
The second staging
of the tournament was contested between eight sides, with Finals Day seeing teams
split into the Cup, Bowl and Plate to see who would collect the trophies at the
end of play.
The second
tier Bowl competition was won by debutants Jeju CA of South Korea who defeated ADF
Tigers of Penang in Malaysia by 5 runs in a thrilling finale as Park Taekwan picked
up the player of the match plaudits with 32 not out and 1-8.
The Plate saw
the CBB SC’s; based in Chiang Mai see off Klang CA of Malaysia. The victors got
over the line by 4 wickets thanks to the efforts of player of the match Sharek
Kader who remained undefeated on 29 and only went for 4 from his over.
Finals Day had
begun with matches to decide the finalists in each grade. Raju’s CC saw off the
Tigers and the Academy. The Academy narrowly saw off the challenge of Jeju; who
gained a psychological advantage with their win against the Tigers.
The CBB SC’s
won their plate final place after wins against their second string SK’s line up
and the Beer Battered Seadogs of England who also suffered defeat against Klang.
The
adjudication panel decided that the Player of the Tournament Award went to Praveen
Kumar of Raju’s CC for his contribution over the three days of cricket, which
included 191 runs and 5 wickets over the weekend.
Monies were
raised throughout the three days for the Chiang Mai Schools Cricket Alliance
who assist in the development of junior cricket in Northern Thailand.
ACST
Chairman, Michael ‘Cat’ Maher, was delighted at the ground following play.
"This has been another excellent gathering of good people who love our
beautiful game. The eight competing sides have played some super cricket, and
all played in the correct way”.
“We may have
had a small number of teams but the quality of those who have attended has more
than compensated for that. In closing I thank our valued sponsors, The Duangtawan
Hotel and Asia Escape Holidays, as well as any others who’ve supported the ACST.”
The next
ACST event will be the Phuket Cricket Week in April 2020, containing the Phuket
International Cricket Sixes and the Thalang International Cricket 7’s.
Day

Cricket’s
the Winner on Day Two at Chiang Mai
Participants
put on a fine display of seven a side cricket on Day Two of the Siam
International Cricket Sevens. Raju’s CC led the way with an unbeaten record of
4 victories in Round One before seeing off Jeju CA in the Cup/Bowl group, but
all sides have reasons to be happy with their day’s work.
Raju’s
Academy also continued their fine form with wins against the CBB SK’s and the
ADF Tigers in the Cup/Bowl.
The
tournament is being contested between eight sides, with participants assembling
from all points of the compass to be part of the celebrations, with the
Gymkhana Club ground looking at its majestic best.
Jeju CA of
Korea are the first representatives at an ACST event from that nation since the
Korean Crusaders graced the 2008 Philippines International Cricket Sixes. The
line up consists of local cricketers who taught themselves the game by watching
YouTube coaching videos. They progressed to the top four by virtue of a fine
win over the Beer Battered Seadogs.
The other
debutant side Klong CA hail from Malaysia. They went down to the Tigers of
Penang to find themselves placed in the Plate division, where they boosted
their hopes of reaching the final with victory against the CBB SK’s.
Play got
under way with a 16 over a side affair featuring 18 of the top players of the
tournament.
At the close
of play participants congregated at the Boundary Bar to enjoy a social evening
over food and drinks and to continue making Friendships Through Cricket where Tournament
Referee Ian Liddell reflected on proceedings.
“It’s
fantastic to see cricket lovers from all backgrounds enjoying each other’s
company and playing competitive cricket in the right spirit”. “There are not
many better venues anywhere than the Gymkhana here in Chiang Mai. It adds so
much to the spectacle,” added Mr Liddell.
Finals Day
at the Gymkhana Club begins at 9.10am on Saturday. Spectators are welcome,
admission is free, and refreshments are available.
Day One Wrap: Friday 22nd
November
Raju’s duo lead the
charge
on Day One of the Siam
International Cricket Sevens
Indian sides
Raju’s Cricket Club and Raju’s Academy took the plaudits on Day One as the 2019
Siam International Cricket Sevens got underway in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where eight
teams have assembled from far and wide to participate in the majestic
surroundings of the Gymkhana Club Ground.
Raju’s CC; the
reigning champions of the event played some majestic cricket to see off Malaysia’s
Klang CA, Jeju CA of South Korea and the international playboys of the CBB SK’s.
The club from Hyderabad have a formidable record in these short forms of the
game; listing titles in Jakarta and Nepal among their role of honour. The
Academy side defeated ADF Tigers of Penang, Yorkshire’s Beer Battered Seadogs
and CBB SC’s.
The Tigers;
featuring Thai international star Chanchai saw off CBB SC’s before smashing the
Seadogs to smithereens. Two sides making their debut at an ACST event were
Klang CA of Malaysia and Jeju CA of South Korea.
Jeju won the
virgins derby between the two sides while Klang could take consolation from
their earlier victory against the CBB SK’s. The tournament had got off to a
dramatic start as the CBB SC’s got over the line from the final ball of the
match to claim victory over the Seadogs.
The teams
were well rested on arrival at the ground following their stay at the
Duangtawan Hotel; and the opening evening party at the Zoom Bar in the city. The
tournament continues the ACST mantra of “Making Friendships Through Cricket” as
well as participants raising funds for junior cricket development in the
region.
Day Two at
the Gymkhana Club will start at 12.00am on Saturday following an all-star game
featuring the 22 best players of the tournament. Spectators are welcome,
admission is free, and refreshments are available.
